About the course

Selective Mutism is classified as an anxiety disorder and commonly occurs in children below the age of 5 years. Characterized by a child’s inability to speak in certain social situations, the NHS estimates that around 1 in 140 children in the UK are affected by Selective Mutism and that it is a common reason for the child to be referred for psychotherapy.

Selective Mutism usually begins in childhood, often the cause/causes are unknown. Typically, the hoped for outcome of the referrer and/or parent is for the child to speak, yet the expectation to talk can trigger a freeze response leading to feelings of anxiety and panic which makes speaking impossible.

This refresher session will explore Selective Mutism through a neurobiological lens to understand the condition, signs that may be present for the child and myths associated with it. We will share case studies to show how the creative toolkit can be used to work therapeutically with children who have Selective Mutism.
